You’re Not Alone: How Chinese Medicine Can Support Milk Supply After Preeclampsia

/in , , , , , /by

New research confirms a link between preeclampsia and breastfeeding struggles: Chinese medicine offers hope

Preeclampsia is more than a pregnancy complication—it’s a whole-body crisis that reverberates into the postpartum period in ways many people don’t anticipate. You survive the storm, perhaps via emergency birth, and find yourself on the other side, baby in arms, but depleted, disoriented, and—often—struggling to make enough milk.

If this is you, please know: you are not alone, and you can get help.

A new study out of Yale confirms what many new parents with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) like preeclampsia have long sensed—that these conditions don’t just affect your body during pregnancy, but also significantly reduce your chances of initiating or sustaining breastfeeding.

Researchers found that women with HDP had 11% higher odds of never breastfeeding, and for those who did start, a 17% higher probability of stopping sooner than their peers. On average, breastfeeding ended 17 weeks earlier than among those without HDP.

But here’s the hopeful part: these findings don’t just illuminate a problem—they point toward a solution. As the study’s lead author put it, “Pregnancy is a critical, and often underutilized, period for lactation education and support.” That’s where Chinese medicine shines.

How Chinese Medicine Can Help Rebuild Milk Supply After Preeclampsia

In Chinese medicine, we understand milk production not just as a mechanical process, but as a vital expression of your body’s inner balance—particularly the health of your Qi (energy), Blood, and Spleen and Liver systems. After preeclampsia, these systems are often left taxed and disordered. With the right support, they can be restored.

1. Acupuncture to Restore Flow and Calm the Nervous System

Preeclampsia often arises in a body under immense stress, and that stress doesn’t end after birth. Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow to the chest and breast tissue—all essential for nourishing both parent and child.

Specific acupuncture points are used to:

  • Encourage milk letdown

  • Strengthen the Spleen and Stomach (which generate postnatal Qi and Blood)

  • Soothe Liver Qi (often affected by trauma, tension, or grief)

  • Support hormonal balance and reduce anxiety

Many patients report feeling grounded, rested, and emotionally steadier after their sessions—key ingredients for both milk supply and maternal mental health.

2. Herbal Medicine to Replenish What’s Been Lost

Chinese herbal formulas offer individualized support to rebuild what preeclampsia has drained. Depending on your presentation, we may use herbs to:

  • Tonify Blood and Qi, helping your body generate more milk

  • Gently move stagnant fluids, addressing residual swelling or preeclampsia-related edema

  • Regulate hormones, especially if postpartum bleeding, mood changes, or insomnia are present

  • Enhance digestion and nutrient absorption, crucial after a difficult pregnancy or birth

Importantly, these formulas are tailored to your specific needs, and I only use herbs that are safe for lactating parents.

3. Whole-Body, Trauma-Informed Care

If you’ve experienced preeclampsia, you’ve been through a trauma—physically, emotionally, and hormonally. Chinese medicine offers a framework that sees you as whole, not broken. You’re not expected to “bounce back.” Instead, we move gently, addressing the root imbalances and making space for grief, depletion, and healing.

A Call for Better Support—and Better Systems

The Yale study highlights what many of us in integrative perinatal care have been witnessing: the U.S. healthcare system is not built to support women—especially those in high-risk groups—through the complex postpartum journey. Black and Native women, who face disproportionately high rates of HDP and breastfeeding cessation, deserve targeted, culturally sensitive care that honors their strength and stories.

If you’ve been told that your low milk supply is just your body’s failure—please, question that. Your body has been through more than most. And it’s not too late to get support.

You Deserve Care That Nourishes You, Too

If you’re postpartum after preeclampsia and struggling with milk supply—or just feeling run down, unseen, or anxious—I invite you to reach out. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help you rebuild from the inside out.

Schedule a free 15-minute consultation with me to explore whether this gentle, effective approach is right for you.

You’re not alone. And you don’t have to do this without support.

Supporting Breastfeeding with Chinese Medicine: Boosting Milk Supply and Preventing Mastitis Naturally

/in , , , , , , , /by

Breastfeeding can be one of the most nourishing and bonding experiences in early motherhood—but it’s not always easy. Many new parents face challenges with milk production, painful engorgement, or even mastitis. If you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone—and that there are safe, natural ways to support your body’s ability to produce and release breast milk.

As a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and depth psychologist, I work with new mothers to bring their bodies back into balance using the time-tested wisdom of Chinese medicine. Whether you’re experiencing low milk supply, clogged ducts, or simply want to support a smoother postpartum recovery, Chinese herbs and acupuncture can offer powerful, gentle support.

How Chinese Medicine Views Lactation

In Chinese medicine, breast milk is seen as a transformation of Blood and Qi—the vital substances that nourish the body. After birth, a mother’s Blood and Qi are often depleted, especially if the labor was long, there was significant blood loss, or recovery has been taxing. If there’s not enough Qi to move milk or enough Blood to make it, supply may be low or erratic. Stagnation can also be a factor—when Qi or milk gets “stuck,” it can lead to painful lumps or mastitis.

Acupuncture for Breastfeeding Support

Acupuncture works by gently restoring balance and flow to the body’s systems. For breastfeeding, treatments may focus on:

  • Boosting Qi and Blood to increase milk production

  • Clearing stagnation to prevent or treat plugged ducts and mastitis

  • Calming stress and supporting sleep, which are essential for healthy milk flow

Many of my clients report a noticeable improvement in milk supply and comfort after just a few sessions.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Lactation

Customized herbal formulas can be incredibly effective for:

  • Supporting healthy milk production

  • Easing breast tenderness and swelling

  • Resolving early signs of mastitis before antibiotics are needed

Herbs like tong cao, mu tong, and huang qi may be included to promote lactation and support immune function, depending on your unique constitution. I carefully tailor each formula based on your personal needs, body type, and any other postpartum symptoms you may be experiencing.

A Holistic, Nourishing Approach

I also incorporate guidance on postpartum nutrition, rest, and emotional support—because your milk supply doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of your whole body, and your whole life. By addressing both the physical and emotional layers of your experience, we can gently restore the flow of nourishment—both to your baby and to yourself.

If you’re navigating breastfeeding challenges and looking for support that honors your body’s natural rhythms, I’d love to help.

Gestational Diabetes & Chinese Medicine: Nurturing Two Lives with Balance and Care

/in , , , , /by

Pregnancy is a sacred journey of transformation—and sometimes, along that path, unexpected challenges arise. One of the most common of these is gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a type of diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy and usually emerges between 24 and 28 weeks. While it can be stressful to receive this diagnosis, I want you to know: you are not alone, and there are natural, time-tested tools that can support you and your baby’s health.

As a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist with a background in depth psychology, I believe in addressing the whole you: body, mind, spirit—and womb. Let’s walk through what gestational diabetes is, how conventional care helps manage it, and how Chinese medicine can work alongside your medical team to offer additional support and nourishment.

What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes occurs when pregnancy hormones from the placenta interfere with the body’s ability to use insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone that helps move glucose (sugar) from your blood into your cells for energy. When this system becomes sluggish, glucose builds up in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar levels that can affect both you and your baby.

Unlike Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes only happens during pregnancy. It doesn’t mean you had diabetes before—or that you’ll necessarily have it after birth—but it does require close monitoring and lifestyle changes to keep both you and your baby safe.

Risks and Complications: Why It Matters

When gestational diabetes isn’t well-managed, it can lead to:

  • Higher birth weights (which can increase the chance of cesarean delivery)

  • Preterm labor

  • Preeclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy)

  • Low blood sugar in the newborn

  • Higher risk of obesity or Type 2 diabetes later in life—for both you and your baby

That said, with proper care, most people with GDM go on to have healthy pregnancies and thriving babies. This is where Chinese medicine can be a gentle, effective partner in your wellness plan.

How Is Gestational Diabetes Treated?

Most treatment plans begin with dietary counseling and learning how to track your blood sugar using a glucose monitor. You’ll likely work with a nutritionist and your OB or midwife to create a food and exercise plan that supports balanced blood sugar. Some people will also need medication like insulin injections to keep levels in range.

This conventional care is essential. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed, tired, or unsupported, Chinese medicine can offer comfort, insight, and holistic strategies to help you navigate this time with more ease.

How Chinese Medicine Can Support Gestational Diabetes

Chinese medicine views pregnancy as a time of dynamic yin-yang balance. Gestational diabetes often arises from what we call Spleen Qi deficiency with Dampness and Heat, meaning the body’s digestive energy is struggling, and internal heat is rising—similar to how modern medicine describes insulin resistance.

Here’s how I support clients with GDM using Chinese medicine:

🌀 Acupuncture: Specific points can help regulate digestion, calm inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and soothe the nervous system. Regular acupuncture treatments may help stabilize blood sugar fluctuations and relieve related symptoms like fatigue, thirst, or nausea.

🌿 Chinese Herbal Medicine: While not all herbs are safe during pregnancy, there are gentle formulas designed to strengthen digestion, reduce excess heat, and nourish the Spleen and Stomach. These are always customized to your constitution and prescribed with care.

🥣 Food as Medicine: Chinese medicine places great emphasis on the energetics of food. I offer personalized nutrition recommendations based not only on carbs and macros, but also on how to support your digestion energetically—favoring warm, cooked foods that ground and nourish.

🧘🏽‍♀️ Mind-Body Support: Stress impacts blood sugar levels. I teach breathwork, meditation, and somatic practices drawn from depth psychology and Chinese medicine to help regulate your nervous system, enhance sleep, and promote emotional wellbeing.

You Are Not Your Diagnosis

Gestational diabetes does not define you. It’s a signal—a request from your body for deeper attention, nourishment, and support. In Chinese medicine, we don’t just treat the condition; we support the person experiencing it—with compassion, reverence, and practical tools.

Whether you’re already receiving care or newly diagnosed and unsure where to begin, I’m here to help.

🌿 Let’s talk about how we can create a plan that aligns with both ancient wisdom and modern science.

Preeclampsia and Pregnancy: How Chinese Medicine Can Help

/in , , , , , , /by

Pregnancy is often described as a time of joy and anticipation—but for some, it becomes clouded by fear and medical complexity. One such complication is preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening condition that usually arises after 20 weeks of gestation in those with previously normal blood pressure. While Western medicine offers crucial monitoring and treatment, Chinese medicine provides a powerful, integrative approach to supporting the body and mind before, during, and after this diagnosis.

As a licensed acupuncturist and board-certified specialist in reproductive health, I walk alongside those facing high-risk pregnancies with care, clarity, and compassion. Let’s take a closer look at what preeclampsia is—and how Chinese medicine can support your well-being at every stage.

What Is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy characterized by:

  • High blood pressure

  • Protein in the urine (proteinuria)

  • Signs of organ damage, particularly to the liver or kidneys

Symptoms can be subtle or nonexistent. In fact, many cases are only identified during routine prenatal visits. More noticeable signs may include:

  • Severe headaches

  • Vision changes

  • Swelling in the hands and face

  • Shortness of breath

  • Pain under the ribs

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Sudden weight gain

Preeclampsia is more than just a blood pressure issue—it is a systemic condition that can affect many organ systems. If left untreated, it can lead to complications like fetal growth restriction, placental abruption, HELLP syndrome, seizures (eclampsia), and even maternal or infant death.

That’s why early detection and careful management are critical.

Risk Factors: More Than Biology

Certain conditions increase the risk of developing preeclampsia, including:

  • A history of preeclampsia

  • Diabetes or kidney disease

  • Pregnancy via IVF

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Being pregnant with multiples

  • Obesity or advanced maternal age

Research also shows higher rates among Black and Indigenous women in North America—not because of biological differences, but due to systemic inequities in access to care, chronic stress, and racial bias in medical settings. This makes culturally aware, equitable healthcare support even more vital.

Chinese Medicine’s Holistic Approach

In Chinese medicine, preeclampsia is viewed through the lens of Qi (vital energy), Blood, and organ system harmony. Several patterns may be involved, often including:

  • Liver Qi Stagnation or Liver Yang Rising — associated with high blood pressure, headaches, and irritability

  • Spleen Qi Deficiency — contributing to edema, protein in the urine, and fatigue

  • Kidney Yin Deficiency — impacting fluid metabolism, blood pressure regulation, and fetal nourishment

  • Dampness and Phlegm Accumulation — leading to swelling and sense of heaviness

Each pattern has its own unique treatment strategy, but the aim is always to:

  • Gently regulate blood pressure

  • Support healthy kidney and liver function

  • Nourish the uterus and placenta

  • Calm the spirit (Shen) and reduce stress

  • Promote optimal fetal development

Acupuncture and customized Chinese herbal medicine can play a powerful role in stabilizing symptoms, supporting organ function, and reducing risk of escalation—always in coordination with your OB or midwife. My care plans are collaborative, personalized, and evidence-informed.

Can You Use Chinese Medicine If You’ve Already Been Diagnosed?

Yes. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed, are being monitored, or are recovering postpartum, Chinese medicine can complement your current care team. I can work with your provider to help you feel more grounded, reduce anxiety, improve circulation and nourishment to your baby, and help your body recover if early delivery becomes necessary.

Postpartum preeclampsia is also possible—an often-overlooked condition that Chinese medicine can help stabilize with gentle, nourishing support.

Prevention: East Meets West

If you have known risk factors, your Western provider may recommend a daily low-dose aspirin starting at 12 weeks. Alongside this, Chinese medicine offers:

  • Diet and lifestyle guidance specific to your constitution

  • Herbal formulas that strengthen Kidney and Spleen function

  • Acupuncture to reduce stress and regulate blood pressure

  • Safe detoxification strategies to optimize organ function before conception

If you’ve had preeclampsia before or are preparing for a future pregnancy, now is the time to act preventatively.

You’re Not Alone

If you’re facing preeclampsia—or worried about your risk—I invite you to connect with me. Together, we can explore your options with care and clarity. My integrative, trauma-informed approach blends the wisdom of Chinese medicine with your unique story and health goals.
