You’re Not Alone: How Chinese Medicine Can Support Milk Supply After Preeclampsia

/in , , , , , /by

New research confirms a link between preeclampsia and breastfeeding struggles: Chinese medicine offers hope

Preeclampsia is more than a pregnancy complication—it’s a whole-body crisis that reverberates into the postpartum period in ways many people don’t anticipate. You survive the storm, perhaps via emergency birth, and find yourself on the other side, baby in arms, but depleted, disoriented, and—often—struggling to make enough milk.

If this is you, please know: you are not alone, and you can get help.

A new study out of Yale confirms what many new parents with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) like preeclampsia have long sensed—that these conditions don’t just affect your body during pregnancy, but also significantly reduce your chances of initiating or sustaining breastfeeding.

Researchers found that women with HDP had 11% higher odds of never breastfeeding, and for those who did start, a 17% higher probability of stopping sooner than their peers. On average, breastfeeding ended 17 weeks earlier than among those without HDP.

But here’s the hopeful part: these findings don’t just illuminate a problem—they point toward a solution. As the study’s lead author put it, “Pregnancy is a critical, and often underutilized, period for lactation education and support.” That’s where Chinese medicine shines.

How Chinese Medicine Can Help Rebuild Milk Supply After Preeclampsia

In Chinese medicine, we understand milk production not just as a mechanical process, but as a vital expression of your body’s inner balance—particularly the health of your Qi (energy), Blood, and Spleen and Liver systems. After preeclampsia, these systems are often left taxed and disordered. With the right support, they can be restored.

1. Acupuncture to Restore Flow and Calm the Nervous System

Preeclampsia often arises in a body under immense stress, and that stress doesn’t end after birth. Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow to the chest and breast tissue—all essential for nourishing both parent and child.

Specific acupuncture points are used to:

  • Encourage milk letdown

  • Strengthen the Spleen and Stomach (which generate postnatal Qi and Blood)

  • Soothe Liver Qi (often affected by trauma, tension, or grief)

  • Support hormonal balance and reduce anxiety

Many patients report feeling grounded, rested, and emotionally steadier after their sessions—key ingredients for both milk supply and maternal mental health.

2. Herbal Medicine to Replenish What’s Been Lost

Chinese herbal formulas offer individualized support to rebuild what preeclampsia has drained. Depending on your presentation, we may use herbs to:

  • Tonify Blood and Qi, helping your body generate more milk

  • Gently move stagnant fluids, addressing residual swelling or preeclampsia-related edema

  • Regulate hormones, especially if postpartum bleeding, mood changes, or insomnia are present

  • Enhance digestion and nutrient absorption, crucial after a difficult pregnancy or birth

Importantly, these formulas are tailored to your specific needs, and I only use herbs that are safe for lactating parents.

3. Whole-Body, Trauma-Informed Care

If you’ve experienced preeclampsia, you’ve been through a trauma—physically, emotionally, and hormonally. Chinese medicine offers a framework that sees you as whole, not broken. You’re not expected to “bounce back.” Instead, we move gently, addressing the root imbalances and making space for grief, depletion, and healing.

A Call for Better Support—and Better Systems

The Yale study highlights what many of us in integrative perinatal care have been witnessing: the U.S. healthcare system is not built to support women—especially those in high-risk groups—through the complex postpartum journey. Black and Native women, who face disproportionately high rates of HDP and breastfeeding cessation, deserve targeted, culturally sensitive care that honors their strength and stories.

If you’ve been told that your low milk supply is just your body’s failure—please, question that. Your body has been through more than most. And it’s not too late to get support.

You Deserve Care That Nourishes You, Too

Supporting Breastfeeding with Chinese Medicine: Boosting Milk Supply and Preventing Mastitis Naturally

/in , , , , , , , /by

Breastfeeding can be one of the most nourishing and bonding experiences in early motherhood—but it’s not always easy. Many new parents face challenges with milk production, painful engorgement, or even mastitis. If you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone—and that there are safe, natural ways to support your body’s ability to produce and release breast milk.

As a licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and depth psychologist, I work with new mothers to bring their bodies back into balance using the time-tested wisdom of Chinese medicine. Whether you’re experiencing low milk supply, clogged ducts, or simply want to support a smoother postpartum recovery, Chinese herbs and acupuncture can offer powerful, gentle support.

How Chinese Medicine Views Lactation

In Chinese medicine, breast milk is seen as a transformation of Blood and Qi—the vital substances that nourish the body. After birth, a mother’s Blood and Qi are often depleted, especially if the labor was long, there was significant blood loss, or recovery has been taxing. If there’s not enough Qi to move milk or enough Blood to make it, supply may be low or erratic. Stagnation can also be a factor—when Qi or milk gets “stuck,” it can lead to painful lumps or mastitis.

Acupuncture for Breastfeeding Support

Acupuncture works by gently restoring balance and flow to the body’s systems. For breastfeeding, treatments may focus on:

  • Boosting Qi and Blood to increase milk production

  • Clearing stagnation to prevent or treat plugged ducts and mastitis

  • Calming stress and supporting sleep, which are essential for healthy milk flow

Many of my clients report a noticeable improvement in milk supply and comfort after just a few sessions.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Lactation

Customized herbal formulas can be incredibly effective for:

  • Supporting healthy milk production

  • Easing breast tenderness and swelling

  • Resolving early signs of mastitis before antibiotics are needed

Herbs like tong cao, mu tong, and huang qi may be included to promote lactation and support immune function, depending on your unique constitution. I carefully tailor each formula based on your personal needs, body type, and any other postpartum symptoms you may be experiencing.

A Holistic, Nourishing Approach

I also incorporate guidance on postpartum nutrition, rest, and emotional support—because your milk supply doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of your whole body, and your whole life. By addressing both the physical and emotional layers of your experience, we can gently restore the flow of nourishment—both to your baby and to yourself.

If you’re navigating breastfeeding challenges and looking for support that honors your body’s natural rhythms, I’d love to help.

Motherwarming

/in , , /by

Motherwarming is a therapeutic technique for nourishing women who have recently given birth. Using an ignited stick of the compressed herb mugwort (Artemisia) along acupuncture points on the lower abdomen, the belly is gently warmed for a period of 5 to 15 minutes.

Postpartum Nourishing Care

Lighting the Moxa Stick

Traditional knowledge from China reports that Motherwarming is useful in:

  • helping the organs of the abdomen recover after pregnancy
  • increasing breast milk supply
  • healing scars from cesarean sections
  • decreasing abdominal pain after birth
  • providing the mother with increased feelings of well-being, stamina and strength.

Motherwarming is useful for women who have given birth both vaginally or via cesarean section, but should not be done by women who are experiencing any type of infection or who are already feeling overheated.

When to Use Motherwarming

Motherwarming can be started as early as 4-5 days after giving birth and can be continued regularly as desired during the first month postpartum. Even after the early postpartum period is over, motherwarming can be useful in easing the pain of menstrual cramps.

Holding the Moxa Stick Above the Skin

What You Need for Motherwarming

The stick of mugwort you have been given is called a moxa stick. It has undergone a process involving charcoal that helps in reducing smoke and odor in your home. Prior to lighting the moxa you will need:

  • a lighter or match
  • a small candle
  • a small tray for removing ash from the burning ember
  • a small jar with sand or rice in the bottom for extinguishing the moxa when finished

How to Use Moxa for Motherwarming

Motherwarming can be performed by the mother, or by friends and family.

Light one end of the moxa stick from the burning candle, the same way you would a stick of incense. It may take a few moments for the end to light completely. You want the end of the moxa stick to be glowing red, evenly, on all sides of the tip. When you blow on it you will be able to feel warmth radiating from the red ember.

To perform Motherwarming hold the tip of the lit moxa stick 2-5 centimeters from the mother’s belly button and slowly move it back and forth along the center of her body between the belly button and the top of her pubic bone. She should feel a pleasant radiating warmth coming from the moxa and the feeling should never become uncomfortably hot. Continue to slowly move the moxa stick up and down the center line of her lower abdomen for 5-15 minutes.

The moxa stick should never make direct contact with her skin.

As the stick burns it will create ash, which should be gently scraped off on the edge of the small tray.

When you finish place the moxa lit side down into the jar with sand/rice at the bottom. This will extinguish the moxa stick and it will be ready the next time you’d like to use it. The mother should then enjoy some quiet time for resting.
