A Whole-Person Approach to Restoring Vitality

Though small in size, the thyroid holds profound influence—quietly regulating metabolism, mood, energy, temperature, and hormonal rhythms. When out of balance, its distress can echo through the whole body: fatigue that feels like fog rolling in, weight fluctuations without clear cause, a racing heart, or a heavy mind.

Conventional approaches often focus narrowly on hormone levels. In contrast, Chinese medicine sees the thyroid not as an isolated organ but as part of a wider, dynamic interplay between body, mind, and spirit. Through acupuncture, classical herbal formulas, and therapeutic lifestyle guidance, I help guide the body back to harmony—while offering space for emotional healing, self-understanding, and rest.

This is the art of true support: listening deeply to both the visible symptoms and the quiet whispers beneath them.

Reframing Thyroid Disorders Through Chinese Medicine

In biomedicine, thyroid conditions are commonly diagnosed as:

  • Hypothyroidism – exhaustion, cold sensitivity, weight gain, foggy thinking

  • Hyperthyroidism – restlessness, palpitations, weight loss, heat intolerance

  • Goiter or Nodules – physical swelling, often with hormonal disruption

  • Thyroiditis – inflammation, sometimes postpartum or autoimmune in nature

Chinese medicine views these patterns through the movements of Qi, Yin and Yang, and the health of interwoven systems—especially the Kidneys, Liver, and Spleen:

  • The Kidneys are the deep well of vitality, governing metabolism, growth, and hormonal balance.

  • The Liver ensures smooth flow—of blood, energy, and emotions.

  • The Spleen supports nourishment, mental clarity, and transformation of food into usable vitality.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, Chinese medicine seeks to understand the root imbalance unique to you—so that true healing can unfold.

Acupuncture: Reconnecting the Threads of Balance

Acupuncture is more than symptom management—it’s a dialogue between body and spirit. With each needle, we invite the body to remember its own intelligence, to soften into repair.

For those navigating thyroid imbalances, acupuncture may:

  • Regulate the immune system, especially in autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s or Graves’

  • Calm the nervous system by settling the Shen (spirit), reducing stress-driven flare-ups

  • Harmonize Yin and Yang—warming a sluggish metabolism, or cooling a racing heart

  • Improve circulation, helping resolve goiter and nodules

  • Support the HPT axis, the delicate hormonal dialogue between brain and thyroid

Each treatment is tailored to your constitution—attending not just to the physiology, but to how it feels to be you within it.

Herbal Medicine: Rooted Support, Personalized for You

Chinese herbs are prescribed not by diagnosis, but by pattern. Each formula is a conversation between plant and person, chosen to meet you exactly where you are.

For example:

  • Yin-deficient patterns (often hyperthyroid): Herbs like Zhi Mu and Sheng Di Huang cool inner heat and soothe restlessness

  • Yang-deficient patterns (often hypothyroid): Rou Gui and Fu Zi offer warmth and rekindle low reserves

  • Liver and Spleen imbalances: Formulas like Xiao Yao San ease emotional constraint, improve digestion, and lift mood

  • Blood and Qi deficiency: Dang Gui and Huang Qi support vitality and reduce fatigue

  • Immune dysregulation: Bai Shao and Huang Qin calm autoimmune activity gently

These are not quick fixes. They are time-honored companions on the journey back to balance.

Living in Rhythm: Lifestyle Guidance from Chinese Medicine

The way we live, eat, move, and rest either supports or drains the thyroid. In my work, I help you cultivate a life that nourishes your endocrine health—without overwhelm.

Core principles I often recommend include:

  • Warm, cooked meals to support digestion and Qi production

  • Nourishing foods like bone broth, walnuts, black sesame, and sea vegetables (in moderation and with guidance)

  • Avoiding excess cold, dairy, and sugar, which contribute to Dampness and sluggishness

  • Restorative practices like walking, gentle stretching, Qi Gong, and time in nature

  • Emotional attunement, using tools from depth psychology to understand the emotional layers behind thyroid patterns

  • Protecting your neck and throat—symbolically and physically—from cold wind and harsh voices

These shifts are not prescriptions, but invitations. Each step is taken in alignment with your body’s readiness and your life’s unfolding.

A Path of Healing That Honors All of You

You are not your lab results. You are a whole being—complex, beautiful, and deserving of care that sees beyond the surface.

If you are tired of feeling unseen, overwhelmed by symptoms, or unsure where to turn next, Chinese medicine offers a different way forward. Together, we can listen for the root cause, support your thyroid gently, and invite your full vitality to return.

The Lotus Effect

Have you ever seen a lotus leaf after a rainstorm? Often it will look like jewels of water are resting on the leaves. These “jewels”, or droplets of water, pick-up particles of dirt as they roll over the surface of the leaf, cleansing the leaf so that it can maintain its powerful process of photosynthesis, converting the sunlight into the energy it needs to thrive.

This is known as the Lotus Effect, and is how we envision our work with our patients, helping each person to turn obstacles into opportunities and nourish their destiny.

“I have noticed that people are dealing too much with the negative, with what is wrong. They do not touch enough on what is not wrong. . . . Why not try the other way, to look into the patient and to see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom?” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
