Summer is here and it is the season of Fire in Chinese medicine—a time of warmth, expansion, joy, and connection. The energy rises, blossoms, and moves outward. While it’s a season full of vitality, it can also bring overheating, restlessness, inflammation, and burnout—especially if we don’t adjust our diet and lifestyle to meet the season’s needs.

Summer time!

Here are some gentle, supportive ways to stay cool and nourished through food, while aligning with summer’s vibrant rhythm:

Hydrate with Yin-Nourishing Foods

Summer heat tends to dry out the body fluids, so we want to focus on foods that build yin, moisten, and gently clear internal heat. Try:

  • Cucumbers – cooling and hydrating, they help reduce internal heat

  • Watermelon – nature’s perfect summer food: sweet, cooling, and full of water

  • Mint tea – gently disperses heat and soothes irritability

  • Chrysanthemum tea – a cooling herbal tea that clears the head and eyes

  • Pear – moistening to the lungs and throat; great if you’re feeling dry or hoarse

Favor Light, Fresh, Seasonal Foods

Summer is not the time for heavy stews or overly greasy meals. Lightly cooked, colorful meals help your digestive fire stay steady without overwhelming it:

  • Lightly steamed greens like bok choy, Swiss chard, or dandelion

  • Sprouted mung beans or adzuki beans – naturally detoxifying and easy to digest

  • Summer squash, zucchini, and tomatoes – cooling and vibrant

  • Fresh herbs like cilantro, basil, and dill – promote circulation and uplift the spirit

Avoid Over-Chilling the System

While it’s tempting to load up on iced drinks and raw foods, too much cold can weaken your digestion (your “Spleen qi,” in Chinese medicine). Instead, gently cook your meals, and drink your water room temperature or slightly cool. A splash of lime or a slice of cucumber adds a refreshing touch without dampening your digestive fire.

Support Your Heart & Spirit

Summer corresponds with the Heart and Shen (spirit). This is a time to open your heart, laugh more, rest when you need to, and spend time in meaningful connection. If you’re feeling agitated, anxious, or unable to sleep—your Heart may be overheated.

Try a bowl of lotus seed and lily bulb soup, or sip on rose petal tea to calm and soothe the Heart. These gentle botanicals support emotional balance and help anchor your spirit.

Ready to Align with the Season?

In my practice, I offer Five Element Seasonal Alignment sessions to help you stay harmonized with nature’s cycles. If you’re struggling with heat signs like irritability, night sweats, insomnia, or inflammation—or just want to feel more balanced and connected this season—I’d love to support you.

Reach out through my Contact Page to schedule a session or ask any questions.

Wishing you a cool, joyful summer full of light and nourishment.

With heart,

The Lotus Effect

Have you ever seen a lotus leaf after a rainstorm? Often it will look like jewels of water are resting on the leaves. These “jewels”, or droplets of water, pick-up particles of dirt as they roll over the surface of the leaf, cleansing the leaf so that it can maintain its powerful process of photosynthesis, converting the sunlight into the energy it needs to thrive.

This is known as the Lotus Effect, and is how we envision our work with our patients, helping each person to turn obstacles into opportunities and nourish their destiny.

“I have noticed that people are dealing too much with the negative, with what is wrong. They do not touch enough on what is not wrong. . . . Why not try the other way, to look into the patient and to see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom?” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
