Did you know that autoimmune disorders affect an estimated 5–10% of the population? While often thought of as separate from reproductive health, these conditions can significantly impact fertility in both women and men. If you’re trying to conceive while navigating an autoimmune diagnosis—or simply seeking holistic support—Chinese medicine offers a unique and time-tested approach that addresses the root systems of both immune and reproductive function.

The Link Between Autoimmunity and Fertility

Autoimmune disorders occur when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells and tissues. This self-directed immune activity can cause widespread inflammation and disrupt the delicate hormonal and physiological balance needed for reproduction.

Common autoimmune conditions that affect fertility include:

  • Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus): This systemic condition can interfere with ovulation, embryo implantation, and pregnancy maintenance. Women with lupus often face increased risks of miscarriage or preterm birth.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Beyond joint pain and inflammation, RA can affect fertility by altering hormone levels and ovulatory patterns.

  • Autoimmune Thyroid Disease: Thyroid imbalances, especially hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, are a frequent cause of menstrual irregularities and infertility.

Autoimmune conditions disproportionately affect women—roughly 75% of those diagnosed are female—and many are first diagnosed during the reproductive years, making it essential to consider their impact on fertility from a whole-body perspective.

A Chinese Medicine Perspective

In Chinese medicine, autoimmune disease is often seen as a dysregulation of Wei Qi (defensive or immune energy), combined with imbalances in the organ systems responsible for reproduction—most notably the Kidney, Spleen, and Liver.

Rather than treating the immune system and reproductive system as separate entities, Chinese medicine views the body as an interconnected whole. This allows for deeply individualized care, tailored to the unique pattern of imbalance present in each person.

Some common diagnostic patterns we see in fertility issues complicated by autoimmunity include:

  • Kidney Yin Deficiency: leading to hormonal depletion, irregular cycles, and thin endometrial lining.

  • Liver Qi Stagnation: which can manifest as painful periods, mood changes, and autoimmune flare-ups.

  • Spleen Qi Deficiency: often seen in those with fatigue, digestive symptoms, and poor follicle or sperm development.

How Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs Can Help

  • Acupuncture helps modulate immune function, reduce systemic inflammation, and regulate the HPO axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian), which is essential for ovulation and hormonal balance.

  • Chinese herbal medicine is prescribed based on constitutional patterns and supports both immune modulation and reproductive health.

  • Dietary and lifestyle therapy are woven into treatment, empowering you to reduce triggers, balance hormones, and nourish fertility naturally.

Taking Proactive Steps

If you have an autoimmune condition and are considering pregnancy, it’s important to:

  • Begin the conversation early: Partner with a practitioner who understands both autoimmune disorders and reproductive health.

  • Explore functional lab testing: for thyroid antibodies, inflammation markers, and reproductive hormones.

  • Develop a tailored wellness plan: that supports your immune system, reduces flare-ups, and enhances fertility with seasonal alignment and gentle interventions.

Final Thoughts

Infertility related to autoimmunity can feel overwhelming, but with informed care and a whole-person approach, healing and conception are possible. Chinese medicine offers a compassionate path forward—one that honors the complexity of your body while supporting its innate ability to regulate, conceive, and thrive.

Whether you’re actively trying to conceive, thinking ahead, or simply seeking to improve your health while living with an autoimmune condition, I invite you to reach out. Your body carries deep wisdom, and together we can support its journey toward balance, resilience, and vitality.

The Lotus Effect

Have you ever seen a lotus leaf after a rainstorm? Often it will look like jewels of water are resting on the leaves. These “jewels”, or droplets of water, pick-up particles of dirt as they roll over the surface of the leaf, cleansing the leaf so that it can maintain its powerful process of photosynthesis, converting the sunlight into the energy it needs to thrive.

This is known as the Lotus Effect, and is how we envision our work with our patients, helping each person to turn obstacles into opportunities and nourish their destiny.

“I have noticed that people are dealing too much with the negative, with what is wrong. They do not touch enough on what is not wrong. . . . Why not try the other way, to look into the patient and to see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom?” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
